Homemade nutella and giveaway teaser

Nutella, oh how I love you... I'm assuming you all know what Nutella is right?? Seriously if you don't know... I am so so sad for you, and you MUST go make some now, because it is the best thing. Recently I started seeing commercials on TV for Nutella toting it as a healthy breakfast... wait what?? Are we talking about the same product? It's hazelnuts... and chocolate... in a spreadable form... you're telling me if I put this on toast it's a well balanced breakfast... OK whoever the marketing team was on this one... nice job LOL...

Ingredient list for commercial nutella: "sugar, modified palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, reduced minerals whey (from milk), soy lecithin: an emulsifier, vanillin: an artificial flavor."

You know it's a good breakfast staple when the first ingredient is sugar! How about we make it my way and have it taste delicious AND be better for you?? Hey and this way is vegan to boot!

As you might have guessed, this recipe starts with roasting some hazelnuts (350 degrees for about 10 minutes). Once they are roasted and slightly cooled it's time to remove their skin... I discovered hazelnuts don't all like to get naked... some hold onto their little frail pieces of clothing for dear life!! For those little guys, I said fine you can keep your dignity... into the blender with all of you!

This really is a quick and easy recipe that doesn't involve many ingredients. The batch I made fit perfectly into a small 1/2 pint mason jar. Feel free to double the recipe, since it WILL go fast.

Nutella ::steph chows:: style
1/2 cup roasted hazelnuts
2 Tbs cocoa powder
3 Tbs maple syrup
2 tsp vanilla extract

Roast hazelnuts whole in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes. Let cool a bit and remove skins by rubbing them between a dish towel or your hands. Grind nuts in a food processor until they form into a thick butter. Add remaining ingredients and process until smooth.

Spoon into a jar with a tight fitting lid and refrigerate.


There are so many ways to enjoy nutella... I'll tell you about a few of my favorite ways later on :)

    Thanks for visiting and commenting :) As for your second question, I've seen things like agave nectar used but I think any liquid sugar would work, maybe honey as another option too? As for other nuts, you would loose the unique nutella taste by not using hazelnuts but I bet any nut would work and create a great new nut flavored chocolate spread! Let me know if you end up making a version!!

  4. Oooooh yes yes yes! Nutella is super not healthy, but it's super addictive, so who cares. So interesting the maple syrup/cocoa powder adds the same sweet chocolate flavor. Genius!

  22. That is SO FUNNY...I think the exact same thing whenever I see the nutella commercial! I always think what a bad mother that lady is!!! It's so NOT good for you, but SO DELICIOUS :)

    Great recipe, I'm definitely going to make this, but I think I'll use Agave Nectar instead of maple syrup, to avoid the maple flavour.

  26. It's funny how many of you say nutella = trouble and you can't buy it due to that... CAUSE THAT IS TOTALLY ME!! Yeah I'm all about the moderation.. but it's hard with nutella! This way you can make a small amount and it nice and fresh :)

    Fix my Sync- I was actually surprised that the maple flavor didn't come screaming through, but I get the agave nectar would be great too!

    Deeba is that your case too? When you first asked I assumed an allergy maybe, I always forget that certain ingredients are hard to find in some places!

  29. Oh wow Steph! Home-made Nutella, what a fantastic idea!!! I clearly love the sutff, but I was terrified after giving the ingredient list a closer look, the first one is sugar!! I must must must try this! Looks sufficiently healthy as well. You're my hero, seriously, this has made my day! I want to leave work right now and go make some... but it's only 11:25am!

  37. I've made this nutella recipe twice now! The first was in June and the second time was last night! I used it in the "Cinnamon-Hazelnut Brownies" over @ Sugar Plum. (another good recipe!)

  40. anonymous- I actually used my blender, I can check what kind it is when I'm home. Yeah if you don't have something high powered it's going to be a bit grainy, still tasty, but the texture wont be as smooth!

    I had trouble getting all the hazelnut skins off, it was frustrating.
    Mine wasn't nearly as creamy either, however it's still delicious!

  46. Thanks so much for the recipe. I made a few adjustments based on what I had on hand. I used 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil instead of the maple syrup.

    I have to say that I haven't had nutella in a long time so I don't know exactly what it is supposed to taste like. I think mine came out a little sweet, but otherwise tastes good! A little grainy, too. I used a vitamix blender and felt like it might not have been enough quantity to do it right. I added a little bit of water in order to get it really blended.

  47. Oh my, I can't believe it's that simple. I always disliked all of the 'unclean' and unnecessary ingredients in comercial nutella. I will try this recipe soon !! (this weekend i'm trying my hand at homemade marshmallows for the first time...)

  48. Hi i just made the nutella and it tastes great but i have one question. It doesnt look smooth and i kept blending it but it remained chunky. it was smooth until i started to add the cocoa and syrup. why did this happen and what did i do wrong?

Hmmm normally it is a bit chunky if your blender/food prep isn't strong enough to blend the nuts, but since you said it was smooth up until the cocoa and syrup I'm not exactly sure why that happened :( I'm glad it still tasted good though! Maybe try adding the syrup and cocoa slower? That could help?
