Ingredient list for commercial nutella: "sugar, modified palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, reduced minerals whey (from milk), soy lecithin: an emulsifier, vanillin: an artificial flavor."
You know it's a good breakfast staple when the first ingredient is sugar! How about we make it my way and have it taste delicious AND be better for you?? Hey and this way is vegan to boot!
As you might have guessed, this recipe starts with roasting some hazelnuts (350 degrees for about 10 minutes). Once they are roasted and slightly cooled it's time to remove their skin... I discovered hazelnuts don't all like to get naked... some hold onto their little frail pieces of clothing for dear life!! For those little guys, I said fine you can keep your dignity... into the blender with all of you!
This really is a quick and easy recipe that doesn't involve many ingredients. The batch I made fit perfectly into a small 1/2 pint mason jar. Feel free to double the recipe, since it WILL go fast.
Nutella ::steph chows:: style
1/2 cup roasted hazelnuts
2 Tbs cocoa powder
3 Tbs maple syrup
2 tsp vanilla extract
Roast hazelnuts whole in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes. Let cool a bit and remove skins by rubbing them between a dish towel or your hands. Grind nuts in a food processor until they form into a thick butter. Add remaining ingredients and process until smooth.
Spoon into a jar with a tight fitting lid and refrigerate.
There are so many ways to enjoy nutella... I'll tell you about a few of my favorite ways later on :)
OK now onto the really fun stuff! I just wanted to tip you off to a fabulous giveaway that will be happening here later this week! Here's a little teaser :)
That's just fab that you made your own Nutella...and let them hazelnuts keep some dignity too...LOL!
ReplyDeleteQuestions
1. Can I substitute any other nut for hazelnuts
2. Substitute ofr maple syrup please
Many thanks

Hi Deeba!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting and commenting :) As for your second question, I've seen things like agave nectar used but I think any liquid sugar would work, maybe honey as another option too? As for other nuts, you would loose the unique nutella taste by not using hazelnuts but I bet any nut would work and create a great new nut flavored chocolate spread! Let me know if you end up making a version!!
Hope that helped!
The best way to enjoy Nutella, or should we say hazelnut-chocolate spread, is heaped onto a spoon, straight from the jar.
ReplyDeleteOooooh yes yes yes! Nutella is super not healthy, but it's super addictive, so who cares. So interesting the maple syrup/cocoa powder adds the same sweet chocolate flavor. Genius!
ReplyDeleteI am one of the crazies that's never had nutella!! But now I will-- this is definitely going on my next list. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I never thought to make nutella on my own.
ReplyDeleteI'm so impressed that you made your own nutella. WTG, Steph! I am so trying this! Personally, I like nutella on pretzels ... that yummy salty/sweet thing. Heaven.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous jewelry ... you've certainly got my attention! LOL
Yum. This sounds so good. I will be trying it once I can find some hazelnuts!
ReplyDeleteSo much love for you right now. I like the honey idea...will be trying this soon.
ReplyDeleteI am hooked. Definitely will do this. Love Nutella - but because of the Palm Oil - it is not a regular part of our diet. Why did I assume I had to buy it? This was a burst of inspiration on your part.
ReplyDeletei love Nutella yummy never thought of making it so cool
ReplyDeleteThat looks positively heavenly! I have been eyeing a recipe like this in Gale Gand's new Brunch! book and now I really want to try it!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I love Nutella! but rarely let myself eat it. I have to try making some of this! It looks fab.
ReplyDeleteHomemade Nutella?? Crazy!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try this!
I have everything at home to make this. It's happening soon - maybe even tonight if I have the energy after work!
ReplyDeleteMan look at all these comments!! I'm loving it! I knew everyone would love a post about home made nutella, and Sarah I can't believe you've never had it!!! Everyone let me know how you like it once you make some!!
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me? Making Nutella is that easy. Oh no - I'm in trouble...
ReplyDeleteHomemade nutella sounds wonderful and it looks like it so rich and delicious!
ReplyDeleteYou are a genius!! It looks fantastic!!!! I'm going to get me some hazelnuts!!!
ReplyDeleteI will have to make this for my brother soon! When we were growing up, he used to eat Nutella from the jar by the spoonful.
ReplyDeleteThat looks great!
ReplyDeleteI do not buy Nutella. I don't like to be within 5 feet of Nutella. That stuff is SO dangerous! I may have to give this a try!
That is SO FUNNY...I think the exact same thing whenever I see the nutella commercial! I always think what a bad mother that lady is!!! It's so NOT good for you, but SO DELICIOUS :)
ReplyDeleteGreat recipe, I'm definitely going to make this, but I think I'll use Agave Nectar instead of maple syrup, to avoid the maple flavour.
Wow, your own nutella? I'm definitely impressed! Yummy!
ReplyDeleteWow, that looks so good. I love Nutella so I know I would like this. I just wish we had hazelnuts here. :(
ReplyDeleteI love Nutella, but never buy it because I just might eat the entire jar myself. I bet homemade tastes even yummier!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how many of you say nutella = trouble and you can't buy it due to that... CAUSE THAT IS TOTALLY ME!! Yeah I'm all about the moderation.. but it's hard with nutella! This way you can make a small amount and it nice and fresh :)
ReplyDeleteFix my Sync- I was actually surprised that the maple flavor didn't come screaming through, but I get the agave nectar would be great too!
Emily- really no hazelnuts down there????
Deeba is that your case too? When you first asked I assumed an allergy maybe, I always forget that certain ingredients are hard to find in some places!
This recipe could save me some big bucks. Just bought a jar for a cookie and my kid ate it all.

ReplyDeleteOh wow Steph! Home-made Nutella, what a fantastic idea!!! I clearly love the sutff, but I was terrified after giving the ingredient list a closer look, the first one is sugar!! I must must must try this! Looks sufficiently healthy as well. You're my hero, seriously, this has made my day! I want to leave work right now and go make some... but it's only 11:25am!
ReplyDeleteMegan that is TOO funny that your kid ate the whole jar hehe. Hope you like this version!!
ReplyDeleteMarta- I know I never realized it was THAT bad for you! I knew it was bad but MAN oh MAN! I'm so excited it made your day!! That's awesome!! :D
Making your own nutella sounds like fun. I like that you used maple syrup.
ReplyDeletewow oh wow. i'm in trouble now. i don't think i realized how easy it would be to MAKE nutella...which is weird because i often make my own peanut butter and almond butter. YUM!!
ReplyDeleteOMG! This morning as I was slathering heaps of Nutella on my Organic multi-grain toast, I was thinking to myself that there's gotta be a way to make this wonderful stuff and make it healthier and without the dairy. And here it is! Thank you so much! Yet another reason I need to go buy a food processor.
ReplyDeleteCheers to you!
Genius! This is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThis is Awesome!! Homemade Nutella, you better believe I'll be making this! Thanks for the post :)

I've been searching high and low for a homemade Nutella recipe. All I can say is : FINALLY!
ReplyDeleteHa ha--I'm sitting in front of the computer with my finger in a jar of Nutella thinking how bad it is and that I can only have "one more" fingerful. Now I can make my own and not feel so guilty about eating it! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've made this nutella recipe twice now! The first was in June and the second time was last night! I used it in the "Cinnamon-Hazelnut Brownies" over @ Sugar Plum. (another good recipe!)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.visionsofsugarplum.com/2009/06/cinnamon-halnut-brownies.html
Tara that sounds like the perfect thing to use it in! I'm going to have to try it for sure! I'm glad you like it so much :D
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for posting this healthy and delicious recipe. Which food processor do you use? Mine didn't come out as creamy as in the picture.
ReplyDeleteThank you
anonymous- I actually used my blender, I can check what kind it is when I'm home. Yeah if you don't have something high powered it's going to be a bit grainy, still tasty, but the texture wont be as smooth!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much. I tried it with blender and it was much quicker and easier.
ReplyDeletehomemade nutella??? omg YUM!! Printing recipe now!
ReplyDeleteMy son loves nutella but I've found he might have issues with soy (possibly allergic) so I haven't bought it recently. This will definitely give the boy back his nutella! Thank you for posting this!
ReplyDeletecraftygal86- hope you liked it!
ReplyDeleteAgent Tiki- perfect!! I hope he loves it as much as I do :) a life without nutella... that's no fun at all!
I made this tonight!
ReplyDeleteI had trouble getting all the hazelnut skins off, it was frustrating.
Mine wasn't nearly as creamy either, however it's still delicious!
Thanks so much for the recipe. I made a few adjustments based on what I had on hand. I used 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil instead of the maple syrup.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I haven't had nutella in a long time so I don't know exactly what it is supposed to taste like. I think mine came out a little sweet, but otherwise tastes good! A little grainy, too. I used a vitamix blender and felt like it might not have been enough quantity to do it right. I added a little bit of water in order to get it really blended.
Thanks
Denise

Oh my, I can't believe it's that simple. I always disliked all of the 'unclean' and unnecessary ingredients in comercial nutella. I will try this recipe soon !! (this weekend i'm trying my hand at homemade marshmallows for the first time...)
ReplyDeleteHi i just made the nutella and it tastes great but i have one question. It doesnt look smooth and i kept blending it but it remained chunky. it was smooth until i started to add the cocoa and syrup. why did this happen and what did i do wrong?
ReplyDeletehey chelsea! Hmmm normally it is a bit chunky if your blender/food prep isn't strong enough to blend the nuts, but since you said it was smooth up until the cocoa and syrup I'm not exactly sure why that happened :( I'm glad it still tasted good though! Maybe try adding the syrup and cocoa slower? That could help?
ReplyDeleteawesome, just awesome
ReplyDeleteJust made this and it is awesome! My 10 year old said it is even better than Nutella! Great Recipe!!
