New Ideas for old gadgets

Don't get me wrong, kitchen gadgets are fun, but sometimes you just don't have enough room for them. What do you do with all the ones you already own? Easy, come up with new uses for them. Take an egg slicer. I mean how often do you use this thing? I saw it chilling in the back of the drawer the other day and thought... hmmm what else could I slice up with that thing?

Inspiration. Mushrooms are soft enough that the fine metal string cuts right on through without mashing the mushrooms to pieces! Now when I make pizza I bust out this little guy for perfectly even slices to top my pizza!

Next up are some old wooden chopsticks (not the take out kind, nice ones) Wooden anything kinda makes me a little worried germ wise, but I didn't want to just toss them out.

Bingo! The wooden chopsticks work perfect for fishing a bagel or a small piece of bread out of the toaster! No more burnt fingers or jabbing a metal fork into it!

So I'm curious, what random kitchen gadgets do you have pull double duty?

  5. I use an old tea infuser to spread powdered sugar evenly. It's also pretty useful for sprinkling flour/cornstarch into sauces for thickening. I haaaate whisking it into a small amount of water first for some silly reason.

  7. Ah! That's all so smart. Neither one of us has any funky gadgets, but an ice cream scooper is great for even sized cookies.

  11. Cookie disher (scoop) to fill cooked jumbo shells or agnolotti (fold-over ravioli circles). Bubble wrap to put on bottom of pie carrier for anti-slippage.

  12. I use a highball glass as a rolling pin. It's a pretty decent substitute. lol. Sometimes, my garlic press becomes a ginger press to extract the juices. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

  13. Great blog! I only just discovered it thanks to Foodgawker.

For my contribution, I use my Rice Cooker (in addition to it's normal functions, like Congee, and Chicken Rice, etc.) to slow steep spices into Oils on the WARM setting. I also slow-roast Garlic in Oil, a minute or so on the COOK setting, until I get the 1st couple bubbles, then drop to WARM for a couple hours or so. I strain out all the Garlic cloves to use that day, then save the Roasted Garlic Oil in the fridge for cooking. To boost the flavor, I will even re-use the same Oil next time I want Roasted Garlic, replacing any missing Oil as needed.

    Luisa- oh perfect!

Piee- I've used a wine bottle before hehe

ShoggothDreams- ooo that sounds wonderful! Great idea! And I bet if you made rice right after without totally cleaning it, it would give it a wonderful flavor!

  15. I use a cheese grater, the hand held type that you turn the knob and it grates it down, like these type

to grate chocolate chips! It works perfectly to use for tiramisu or other cake decorations because chocolate shavings are hard to make!

  16. Alicia- that's a great one! I'm always trying to use a normal cheese grater and I always have issues. not anymore!!

  17. I use a bundt pan to cut corn off the cob. (Stand the cob up in the hole of the pan, then cut down the sides. All the corn goes into the pan.)

  18. Great ideas! Was the egg slicer a gift or did you buy it? I always get the little gadgets as gifts that either don't work or I'll never use. An artichoke stand...make artichokes a lot but never used the stand. Chery de-pitter, doesn't work anyway, etc...so many!!!
