Brownie Fail

Happy December!!! So I just read in the news that this is the longest snow free period for Rochester NY in 57 years... it's been 235 days without snow!!! Crazy I know. What does it have to do with this post? Nothing... I just felt like sharing :)

Don't you love when you make a new recipe to bring somewhere... and it totally fails!? I know I love it ;) This recipe was from Martha Stewart... and it looked like it would be so tasty... brownies... with sweet potatoes?? Count me in!! AND it was a pretty healthy recipe, so I didn't even have to change a thing...

maybe I should have though...

These were the thinnest brownies ever, totally didn't rise... and they had a weird, not very sweet taste to them... something was just off... They call them fudge brownies... and yes they were... fudge 1/4 inch thick brownies.

Although my cousins all said they were fine, I was not a fan (and lets be fair here... they are family so were probably just being nice) :D Either way... don't make this recipe here. Just don't do it...

On another side note... while I was in NJ we found two sets of roller skates and two sets of ice skates that were my Nana's and Popop's from the late 1920's early 1930's!! How cool are these things?? I mean just look at the vintage logos!!

  6. I've also made Martha recipes that have failed. She's not any more perfect than we are, eh?

    Nice skates!

  7. I tried to make one of her fudge brownie recipes just a few weeks ago (though I didnt have sweet potatoes!) and when it was done baking it looked like dirt. Crumbly and dry.

I bet you could make your own fudge brownies with sweet potatoes 10x better!

And don't you want snow so you can try out the snowmobile? And maybe justifiably wear a hat or mitts or something?

  10. Hola! I don't love it! I hate it when a recipe fails... but I guess you were being a bit sarcastic :D

It's been great discovering your blog, thanks for leaving a comment in mine :D

  12. that's so interesting about the brownies! I've heard that is a great substitution, but haven't tried it yet. I wonder what the other people do to them so that they turn out as tasty as they say!

  14. Argh, I hate it when a seemingly good recipe doesn't pan out. I wonder what happened? Perhaps you'll give it another go and work your chow-magic on the recipe someday?! :)

Love, the pictures of the skates. So, so cool!

  17. I'm sure if you would have modified the recipe it would have been better ;)

So I read about your co-worker, in reference to the no fat, and I know someone like this too. A woman at my work lost 100+ pounds along with some of the hair on her head. She did no fat, no carbs, for almost a year.

So don't worry I'm not doing anything like that. Just a few weeks with very little fat to see if I feel an affect. Kind of like how you said you could actually feel the affect of read meat...Honestly, I'm thinking that I will feel almost no affect but we shall see.

  18. Too bad these didn't turn out. Low fat is always toughm I'm most sad about that wasted sweet potato! You should try cook's illustrated's low fat fuddgey brownies. They are my favourite brownie period. I can't stand regular brownies because they are too rich. I made them twice on my blog. Just don't add the extra egg white though b/c it makes the texture a little too light. I love trhose vintage skates!

  20. Such a bummer when things don't turn out...but it's kinda nice to see other people's kitchen failures - because then I know it's not just me! Also, then I know what recipe NOT to try:)

  22. I totally hate when something doesn't turn out yummy, and then people who know your history as good, say It's fine! It tastes good.
Last night I made apple slaw, with apricot preserves, shaved apples, honey, spices, pureed sweet potatoe smear wrapped in croissant dough. So great...
But the pizza with the dough, not so much...

  23. Well if a recipe is going to fail than brownies is a good one because you can still repurpose it somehow like crumbling it up to use as an ice cream topping :-D

    Those rollerskates remind me of the days of Dittos pants lol! {yes dating myself}

  24. Agh! That just happened to me tonight. I made two desserts to bring to a food blogger meet-up tomorrow... of all times for a recipe to fail... At least one dessert (these amazing s'mores bars) worked out. The other was just a huge mess that just needs to be tossed.
