After meeting with the wonderful people at Joe Bean Coffee Roasters, I learned very quickly that I don't know BEAN about coffee! I also learned that my normal cup of (generic name coffee) with cream and splenda was no match for a cup of BLACK (yeah you read that right) Joe Bean. I couldn't believe I was drinking coffee black... that's just how good this stuff is. Let me tell you a little about this family owned company:
Joe Bean Coffee is an artisan, micro-roaster that produces specialty coffee of exceptional quality. We roast in small batches using the profile roasting technique. Profile roasting is a unique method that manipulates time and temperature during the roasting process in order to produce a complex coffee with well-developed characteristics. The end result is that our coffee has exceptional, complex layers of flavor.
Some new info I injected into my head while I was there: Did you know the roast (light vs dark) has to do with the temperature the beans are roasted at? How about the art of cupping? What about different brewing methods are preferred for different roasts to bring out flavors? WHO KNEW! Not me obviously. Learn more at JoeBeanRoasters.com
I was lucky enough to enjoy a flight of coffee the last time I was there and learn about different brewing and cupping methods.
I was also able to take a closer look at the green coffee beans and learn about how they work with the growers to provide fair trade organic shade grown beans.
Now onto the giveaway, you are entering to win a 12oz bag of Joe Bean's Wintertime Blend. Here's what the roaster himself had to say about this blend:
We have been working hard to develop a wintertime blend, and are proud to announce that the blend has been finalized! Let me say, that I am particularity pleased with this blend. Our approach with it has been quite different from previous blends. Typically, flavors within a single origin or blend are carefully balanced so the coffee can stand up on its own, with the full range of flavors being readily available. This is the first coffee we have created that is explicitly designed for a pairing. For more from the roaster check out his blog here.
On its own, the coffee has a heavy, sweet, syrupy feel. Lots of molasses, nuts and chocolate. There are some beautiful soft fruit flavors, with a bright clementine or tangerine like acidity. The coffee finishes with strong spice notes of pepper and cinnamon.
However, when you pair the coffee with a dessert, especially one with an earthier sweetness like a pumpkin cake, the flavors become infinitely more complex. You experience a much deeper range of fruits and nuts, with emerging notes of vanilla. Not only that, but the dessert comes alive as well, with the spice and acidity of the coffee perking up the flavors. When trying them together, one can’t help but go back and forth between the two. The aftertaste you are left with is wonderful.
Our goal was to create the perfect complement to a dessert at the end of meal, best shared with family and friends, and I think we’ve come pretty close to creating that perfect flavor profile. I have to say, testing this blend was rather fun as well. Matching various brew methods with various desserts, it’s hard to complain too much. I look forward to releasing this coffee, and I hope it will be well received by everyone.

How I love coffee in the morning. The flavor ... the pick-me-up ... mornings just aren't right when I can't have my cup of Joe!
ReplyDeleteI never really cared for coffee too much. Always drank it with milk & sugar. I still like quite a bit of milk/cream in my coffee, but I really like it much better with no sugar. And the quality of the coffee does make a huge difference. This coffee sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteawesome giveaway! I love coffee any time. I started drinking it in college as a pick-me-up between classes. Right now I just enjoy it because it smells and tastes delicious and keeps my hands warm in my freezing cold office.
ReplyDeleteI am a coffee fanatic! I love trying the different varietal coffees.
ReplyDeleteI have coffee in the mornings, and every afternoon includes a latte made at home :D
I'm totally entering this, just because Monica love's their coffee. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are coffee FANATICS. We grind it fresh every day and, since 2 winters ago, only use a coffee syphon (or French Press) to make our morning joe.
ReplyDeleteYou can't beat good, fresh coffee.
There is nothing like a nice hot cup of coffee to get you going on these cold winter mornings!
ReplyDeleteI LOOOVE a nice hot cup of coffee in the morning to get me going. The combination of the aroma and hotness is what wakes me up!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine drinking (and enjoying) a cup of black coffee. Can't wait to try it!
Freshly roasted coffee beans are a beautiful thing. I grind beans for my morning coffee every day, which I drink while reading my fave blogs!
ReplyDeleteI tweeted :)
ReplyDeleteMan, you have some of the best giveaways...! ;)
ReplyDeleteI can't start my day without a big cup of strong, black coffee. It's really the ritual of brewing and slowly sipping throughout the morning that I love most, though.
I love to support the local coffee guys, always!
ReplyDeleteThe smell, the flavor, the way it brings comfort and coziness to any day, any situation. Give me a cup of coffee ... and suddenly, I'm at home.
ReplyDeleteI can't leave in the morning without a cup of coffee. And my family is of spanish origin, so after every meal together, we always have a round of espresso with dark chocolate! Having an espresso machine is a requirement to getting your own place!
ReplyDeleteI love how coffee has gotten me through 3 years of college (and counting!). If I won, I'd share this coffee with everyone at work...I work in the library, and we always take "coffee breaks" to drink coffee (and we love trying new blends) from our french press! Yes, I love my job ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the awesome giveaway! Stopping by from 20SB...

My favourite thing about coffee is going out with friends and enjoying it with them :D
ReplyDeleteMy morning coffee time is the best part of the day! I make sure I always have time to sit and enjoy it, even if it means getting up at 5:30 a.m. I HAVE to have cream in it though...real cream. One of life's simple pleasures!
ReplyDeleteLove that "french" vanilla coffee creamer that is made with nothing good for you. I love using my french press and impressing friends and family with a really good cup of coffee. Love that my Italian husband calls drip coffee "tea" and makes himself a cappuccino in the mornings. Thanks for the chance to win some great coffee!
ReplyDeleteI've just recently starting drinking coffee, it's growing on me...but I've always loooooved the smell!

I adore coffee all day long. It's like I'm allowing myself a special treat.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is.....continuity. It's always there, like mom. It welcomes a new friend and comforts an old one. It is ritual. It is morning and late evening and celebrations. It makes love to chocolate and gives birth to sensations. It goes to work and it stays home, and it travels wherever you go. It has its own car seats. It is a color, and a scent. It is a start, and end, or a break. It is whatever you need it to be.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! fantastic recipes! check out my blog at http://markrepjulie.blogspot.com/ :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
i love that coffee brings all my friends together....we always meet up at a coffeeshop to catch up or "work" :)
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, what DON'T i love about coffee... I actually just adore the dark deep taste! I actually don't like the way the caffeine makes me feel which is unfortunate because decaf is NOT as good...
ReplyDeleteBut anyways, looove coffee. And sometimes it DOES help to have a kick in the morning (though sometimes it just makes me shaky... :/)
One thing I love about coffee is how direct the link has become between farmer and consumer (at least with the good stuff). I want a great morning cup with a story behind it.
ReplyDeleteJoe Bean's is indeed the best coffee around! Never bitter and never a bad after taste! And you don't need the syruppy calories of those flavored expensive coffee's at other better known brand names. This is best BLACK, or with a dash of cream for special blends on occasion. And I am one known for having "coffee with my cream and sugar"! Joe Bean is Rochester's best! Pass the word and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love the taste of coffee & how it helps get me going in the morning!
ReplyDeleteThank you.

ReplyDeleteYou know it's good coffee when you can drink it black.
