We went to Ithaca this past week for a good friend's wedding and then stuck around a few more days to hike and eat all the tasty things in town. We had a wonderful time! If you go, you HAVE to stop at the Ithaca bakery, the shear number of sandwich options is unreal. We may have eaten lunch there...ummm... every... day... Yup, it was that good. Don't worry we hiked crazy inclines every day to make up for all the delicious things we ate.

Another one of the awesome things about the bakery... they have OPERA CAKE!! We had this on our honeymoon and haven't been able to find it in Rochester, score!!
We also found this SWEET playground that was totally empty for some reason (perk of hiking a state park on a school day)... so I felt the need to take the place over and play on every piece of equipment they had.

And now for a very rare sighting of the illusive husband! Always around but somehow ever running away from the camera. Notice my tight grip so he wouldn't slip away.
More Ithaca bakery yum.

More waterfall hikes

I don't really care if cupcakes are passe now or out of style. These things are tasty and I'm going to keep eating them even if pies are the new thing... or macaroons... or whatever it is that is in now... what's in now? See I don't even know!

I stopped by Katherine's on Monroe the other day and picked up a few treats for dessert. Ok who we kidding we ate these things as our appetizer. And yes *gasp* John ate some! I've beaten him down over the years, he would have never eaten one of these when we first met. bwahahhaha, I think I'm doing him well :)

Which of these three would have been your favorite?
cupcakes
Cookies and Cream - the frosting was crazy sweet, a bit too much for me, but the chocolate cupcake was delicious.
Boston Cream - John's favorite. Yellow cake with a chocolate frosting center and chocolate ganache.
PB cup - 100% perfect if you ask me :) Chocolate cake studded with chocolate chips, a PB filling followed by a PB frosting.

This past weekend I got to go on a random adventure to Syracuse! Sure it's only 1.5 hours away, but I've never really explored the city. To make it even more fun Jeanne came to meet me for a weekend of eating/exploring/laughing/all around good time!

More on the cute shirt I'm wearing to come soon - I made it!

My favorite eaten thing all weekend was a peanut butter oreo "milk" shake  from Strong Hearts Cafe, it's a 100% vegan restaurant and it was SO GOOD!! I have no idea what was in said "milk" shake, but it was thick, creamy, and totally decadent. It was so good we went back for two more the next day :)
veganmilkshake

As for the food there, Jeanne has a green scramble. Tofu, pesto, broccoli, and other various green veggies, she rather enjoyed it. I got an equivalent of a vegan egg mcmuffin, unfortunately mine wasn't as delicious as her meal. (it's ok the milk shake made up for it!)

Another delicious place to eat? Blue Tusk, it's a walk up and order style restaurant with a full bar attached. So you can go order your food, and then walk 10 feet to the left and order a beer to drink with said food, interesting setup and the pulled pork came in more than the standard varieties.

bluetusk
Hello Piggy - Pulled Pork, Kimchi, Sprig of Cilantro, Red Onion, Mayo and a squirt of Sriracha Hot Chile Sauce on a Round Roll. I think they went a little heavy on the sriracha in a few spots, because for half the sammie my mouth was crazy on FIRE, eek, the other half was perfectly flavorful!

We even drove through some questionable abandoned neighborhoods to get some quality home made ice cream. Don't worry the actual ice cream place was nice. Jeanne got a Charlie Brown (chocolate ice cream with peanut butter swirl) it would have been good if there was actually PB in it, she didn't get any...??? weird. I got Midnight craving, which I was told was PB ice cream with chocolate covered potato chips... yeah it was vanilla ice cream, the PB would have made it SO much better. (I suggest asking for a sample taste to make sure what they are telling you is truly what you will get though)

OK I agree in most cases, but when a restaurant is so atrocious in service, attitude, ok flat out everything... you need to warn other people. I'm doing a public service right?

Once a month I meet up with a fun group of women for book club. Each month we pick a new book and a new restaurant to try out, sounds good right?! So far we've eaten at a ton of delicious places, no complaints... until this past Monday... when devastation rang out by the name Chilango's.

First off, we should have had a reservation, but by Sunday night only 5 had RSVP'ed, so no reservation needed, however when 10 of us showed up ready to eat... we knew we needed to ask if they could fit us in. Being a Monday night they were by no means packed and said it wasn't a problem they just needed to push two tables together.... 10 minutes later the waitress said she'd just be one more minute... 20 minutes later while 4 other groups came in and were sat while we patiently waited (our table was set up and ready to go), we finally got the girls attention again and asked if we could at least go sit at the already made up table and look at the menus... with a slightly annoyed look she told us we didn't have a reservation and then let us sit down.... umm seriously lady, we asked if it was ok, you said yes and it would take a second...

45 minutes and counting we finally got our waters and placed our order. At the 1 1/2 mark one girl needed to leave to get home and had asked if hers could be changed to a take out order... 1.45 into the experience we finally got our food.

People kept saying that it's always like this and the service sucks but the food is worth it. I'm sorry but in my book if the service sucks I'm never coming back. Excited to finally get to eat this "amazing food" I was immediately saddened by what was on my plate, it was OK, but nothing great, in the case of the steak taco's one girl had she proclaimed them "inedible". Awesome, at lest I didn't order those. To make matters worse they brought out chicken tacos first ummm wrong order, thankfully it didn't take another 1.45 to get the correct order.

Horrible service + ehh food + a huge bill to pay = a pretty unhappy steph chows

2.5 hours in we finally got our check and had to go pay at the bar since our server had again gone MIA. The manager gave us a $30 gift certificate as a sorry for the service. I informed the group you couldn't pay me to come back here again. I know it's mean, but it's the honest truth! Hopefully next months pick is better, I don't think it's possible for it to be worse...

I sent John a quick text at this point to let him know I wasn't dead and wasn't sure if we were still going out for ice cream since it was so late. He texted back that I should go get ice cream so I wouldn't be cranky when I got home... smart man. With his wise advice in mind we headed over to end the evening on a happy delicious note. Just around the corner Lugias cheered me up. I ordered the baby size, and I'm half way through eating it in the picture below...

(sizes go baby, kiddie, small, medium, large)

I got the kaluah almond amaretto, oh yeah, it made up for the bad mexican 10 fold. mmmmmm bring on Lugias!!!! Next time I say we just go straight for the ice cream and all order larges... we can compete to see who can actually eat the whole thing!

What's your worst restaurant experience? Would you blog about it to warn other people? Or keep your trap shut?

There isn't much better than fresh baked bread if you ask me, but how about fresh baked bread an a cup of joe to go with it? Double bonus! A good friend told me about this place and I'm so happy she did, walking in was a sensory overload of breads and other delicious baked goods. If you live in Rochester make sure to stop at the public market and especially the buildings surrounding it to visit this amazing find. Flour City Bread Company, open Thursdays 7am-1pm, and Saturdays 9am - noon.

Have you even bitten into a sandwich and literally started moaning out load... totally ignoring the weird looks from the people sitting in the booth next to you? Yeah, that was me at Baked and Carved this past week. Just ask Tracy from Sugarcrafter she was my partner in crime for this chow down, hopefully she wasn't too embarrassed by my overly zealous eating, actually I'm pretty sure she wasn't since she was enjoying her sandwich as much as I was.

First things first, how to find the place. I didn't notice a Baked and Carved sign outside but it's actually located INSIDE Salengers Pub on East Ave, so look for the Salengers sign, head inside and you'll see them located in a room to the left of the bar (look for the big chalk board sign saying "EAT" with an arrow... it's hard to miss.

Set up in an open-air kitchen you get to watch the chefs do their thing, baking bread, slinging cookie dough, and roasting the most amazingly tender meats. It became quickly obvious that this was not your typical pub food, it was far elevated above it. Without a fryer in sight the menu is staked with breads baked fresh every day, and meats roasted and carved to perfection. Everything is made in small batches so you know what you are getting is fresh.

I decided to go with the hot corned beef brisket sandwich with russian dressing and lettuce (basically I asked for the reuben without the sauerkraut) I picked fresh Italian bread, the other bread option of the day was a whole wheat (this rotates depending on the day). I can't properly describe to you how tender, juicy, mouthwatering, flavorful this corned beef was. Let me put it to you this way, I grew up outside of NYC and spent a summer working there sampling as many sammies as I could get my hands on... none of them hold a candle to Baked and Carved. And NO I'm no exaggerating, seriously, holy bible, it's THAT good.

Tracy got the Muffaletta also on Italian. She was also over the top amazed at the quality and quantity of meats. I mean seriously look at the size of those sandwiches. You all know how I like to chow... and I couldn't finish mine, I took the rest home in a doggie bag (bonus I now have lunch for tomorrow).

Sandwiches are served with a choice of two side: coleslaw, chips, pickle (more options to come soon). We both went with the coleslaw and pickle option. No need to worry about copious globs of mayo here though, perfectly dressed and seasoned this was not your typical gloppy side. The pickles are the kind you'd find at a good NYC deli, big, crisp, and perfectly dill.

Make sure you save room for dessert, because the cookies are made in small batches and always fresh. Heavily studded with chocolate chips these things were the perfect ending to a meal.

First off I love the name of this eatery, Tossibilities, it's that just fun? We found this place while wondering Ottawa, we walked in to check the menu and the buffalo chicken wrap started calling john's name...

while the froyo was calling mine! (yeah super healthy of me for lunch right?) but I mean look I got raspberries on top of green tea froyo! Think of all the antioxidants people!?!?!

OK so I'm going to get in trouble for this next picture but I couldn't help myself...

chow chow chow!!! and check out that awesome wedding band.. love it!

So you know how in Montreal we couldn't go into the Notre Dame Basillica... well we got to go into the Notre Dame Cathedral in Ottawa and it was super crazy ornate... check this place out!!

Seriously just think for a minute how long that took to all carve... I'm getting bored just thinking about it ;)

So now I get to tell you about Ottawa, it is so beautiful there! There is just amazing architecture wherever you look.

The only thing is when I travel I turn into a total tourist... if there is a statue within site... you better watch out, because this girl will be posing right along with them.

Yeah a sad attempt at pretending to be a lion, but had us both giggling for a good 10 minutes straight :) OK now that you've had your laugh let me tell you about the best dessert ever. This was by far our favorite dessert shop from our entire honeymoon. I ordered a pistachio cake, it was super tasty...

Yeah that's honey on top... *drool*

John ordered an Opera cake and it blew our minds...

According to Wikipedia...
Opera Cake is a type of French cake. It is made with layers of almond sponge cake (known as Joconde in French) soaked in coffee syrup, layered with ganache and coffee buttercream, and covered in a chocolate glaze.

AKA... it's heaven.

This bakery is in byward market and it's at the end of the little market building full of all types of eateries. It's the bakery filled with gigantic photos of Obama when he made a trip there. (apparently they love them some Obama in Ottawa!) As you can guess... I can't remember the name of said bakery... I know... sorry :) UPDATE: Jeanne rocks, the name of the baker is Le Moulin da Provence and here is their website!

OK I lied... I said next up opera cake in ottawa... you'll have to wait since I forgot I had more of Montreal to tell you all about! Please send complaints to management... oh wait that's me...

Not sure why this is in old town... but had to take a picture by it.

I met up with three cute round ladies and had some great conversations.

We ate delicious pizza made by two hungover college kids who couldn't understand why oh why we'd honeymoon in Montreal... thanks guys... the restaurant wasn't on the main drag of old town so it was quiet and a perfect find! And the two guys who served as cook and waiter were more than entertaining :)

Check out my reflection in the puddle... ooo artsy. "uhh john what are you taking a picture of?"

You have to go to Maple Delight, they have gelato made with maple syrup!! And it's delicious!! I had this weird named one that was basically coconut with chocolate pieces in it... but they wouldn't call it coconut... it was delicious!!

Right before we headed to catch our train back to Ottawa we stopped at what looked to be an amazing pastry place... and got this slice of cake that cost $10... $10???? for a slice of cake... this better be freakin amazing...

yeah... it wasn't :( so if you are in old town... don't go to this place.
Happy Canada Day!! Although I'm back in the states I figured I'd write about a delicious canadian treat on this day to celebrate!

John and I met up with my friend Jeanne the last night we were in town and had a wonderful time walking around and eating desserts! Our first stop was to a little pastry shop in ByWard Market. a yummmmm

OK I need help remembering what this bar is called... it begins with a N and it's layers of tastiness :D chocolate, lemon curd, nuts, delicious. We also got a maple cake (although a little lacking in the maple flavor department) and a chocolate layered cake of some sort that was amazing!! John also got a mini gingerbread man... but ate it before we got a picture :D

We also made an appearance at Pure Gelato, the amaretto and cinnamon flavors were AMAZING!!! yum yum yum!!!
